1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You needn't talk like that," she said.
2. There was nothing bold in her manner. Life had not taught herdomination--superciliousness of grace, which is the lordly powerof some women. Her longing for consideration was notsufficiently powerful to move her to demand it. Even now shelacked self-assurance, but there was that in what she had alreadyexperienced which left her a little less than timid. She wantedpleasure, she wanted position, and yet she was confused as towhat these things might be. Every hour the kaleidoscope of humanaffairs threw a new lustre upon something, and therewith itbecame for her the desired--the all. Another shift of the box,and some other had become the beautiful, the perfect.
3. "All that seven hundred dollars?" asked Carrie.
4. "They're back in New York now," Carrie went on. "She did look sonice."
5. At a quarter after one in the morning he came out of the place. The chill, bare streets seemed a mockery of his state. He walkedslowly west, little thinking of his row with Carrie. He ascendedthe stairs and went into his room as if there had been notrouble. It was his loss that occupied his mind. Sitting downon the bedside he counted his money. There was now but a hundredand ninety dollars and some change. He put it up and began toundress.
6. Carrie looked at the card handed by the boy and suffered a shockof surprise.

1. "That's so," said the manager.
2. "Let her go now, quick," said the officer, and again he was off.
3. His senses became cleared now and he looked around. He wasstanding in a little store, where they left him for the moment.Outside, he could see, as he stood wiping his chin, the car andthe excited crowd. A patrol wagon was there, and another.
4. "You didn't go into comedy-drama, after all?" he said, remembering her interest in that form of art.
5. "Now, now," he said, walking. "There, there," and there was acertain Swedish accent noticeable in his voice.
6. "They can't get blood out of a turnip," he said. "if I had itI'd pay them."

1. "I won't," said Carrie, who was, nevertheless, complying againsther will. "Let me go," she said. "How dare you?" and largetears began to gather in her eyes.
2. The conversation turned to other things, and Carrie thought nomore upon the subject until a day or two later, when, going outto market, she encountered Mrs. Vance coming in. The latterrecognised her and nodded, for which Carrie returned a smile. This settled the probability of acquaintanceship. If there hadbeen no faint recognition on this occasion, there would have beenno future association.
3. At breakfast he found himself without an appetite. The meat towhich he helped himself remained on his plate untouched. Hiscoffee grew cold, while he scanned the paper indifferently. Hereand there he read a little thing, but remembered nothing.Jessica had not yet come down. His wife sat at one end of thetable revolving thoughts of her own in silence. A new servanthad been recently installed and had forgot the napkins. On thisaccount the silence was irritably broken by a reproof.
4. "It isn't anything very serious," Hurstwood said solemnly. Hewas very much disturbed over his own situation, and now that hehad Carrie with him, he only wanted to get safely out of reach ofthe law. Therefore he was in no mood for anything save suchwords as would further his plans distinctly.
5. Now a fierce feeling against Carrie welled up--just one fierce, angry thought before the whole thing slipped out of his mind.
6. Now, because Carrie was pretty, the gentlemen who made up theadvance illustrations of shows about to appear for the Sundaypapers selected Carrie's photo along with others to illustratethe announcement. Because she was very pretty, they gave itexcellent space and drew scrolls about it. Carrie was delighted.Still, the management did not seem to have seen anything of it.At least, no more attention was paid to her than before. At thesame time there seemed very little in her part. It consisted ofstanding around in all sorts of scenes, a silent littleQuakeress. The author of the skit had fancied that a great dealcould be made of such a part, given to the right actress, butnow, since it had been doled out to Carrie, he would as leavehave had it cut out.

1. "Oh, not yet," she answered. "I don't want to play any more, though."
2. Chapter XLII
3. "Well, she can afford it as long as he puts up for it," returnedHurstwood. "He's got a soft job."
4、 It came out so flat, however, that it was a deathly thing.Drouet fidgeted. Hurstwood moved his toe the least bit.
5、 She looked at his hand.

She turned and recognised him on the instant. If there ever hadlurked any feeling in her heart against him, it deserted her now.Still, she remembered what Drouet said about his having stolenthe money.

"Aw, come, Carrie," he said, "what can you do alone? Let me helpyou."

He looked so disconsolate that it scared her. She began to seethat she herself had been drifting. She had felt it all thetime.

Drouet, for one, was lured as much by his longing for pleasure asby his desire to shine among his betters. The many friends he methere dropped in because they craved, without, perhaps, consciously analysing it, the company, the glow, the atmospherewhich they found. One might take it, after all, as an augur ofthe better social order, for the things which they satisfiedhere, though sensory, were not evil. No evil could come out ofthe contemplation of an expensively decorated chamber. The worsteffect of such a thing would be, perhaps, to stir up in thematerial-minded an ambition to arrange their lives upon asimilarly splendid basis. In the last analysis, that wouldscarcely be called the fault of the decorations, but rather ofthe innate trend of the mind. That such a scene might stir theless expensively dressed to emulate the more expensively dressedcould scarcely be laid at the door of anything save the falseambition of the minds of those so affected. Remove the elementso thoroughly and solely complained of--liquor--and there wouldnot be one to gainsay the qualities of beauty and enthusiasmwhich would remain. The pleased eye with which our modernrestaurants of fashion are looked upon is proof of thisassertion.

{ This was the atmosphere of the Lyceum--the attitude, for thatmatter, of every managerial office in the city. These littleproprietors of businesses are lords indeed on their own ground.
