1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Drouet noticed this. He saw the new bow in her hair and the newway of arranging her locks which she affected one morning.
2. That night Hurstwood remained down town entirely, going to thePalmer House for a bed after his work was through. He was in afevered state of mind, owing to the blight his wife's actionthreatened to cast upon his entire future. While he was not surehow much significance might be attached to the threat she hadmade, he was sure that her attitude, if long continued, wouldcause him no end of trouble. She was determined, and had worstedhim in a very important contest. How would it be from now on? Hewalked the floor of his little office, and later that of hisroom, putting one thing and another together to no avail.
3. "That's her, all right, I guess," he said.
4. Carrie said nothing.
5. On such occasions, his money went also. He knew of several pokerrooms down town. A few acquaintances he had in downtown resortsand about the City Hall. It was a change to see them andexchange a few friendly commonplaces.
6. "Pretty far--yes."

1. "Yes, indeed," returned Carrie.
2. "Here's fifteen," exclaimed a young man, peering forward withstrained eyes. "It's all I can afford."
3. "Isn't that a pathetic strain?" he inquired, listening.
4. "Well, that's a fine finish," said Drouet. "Pack up and pullout, eh? You take the cake. I bet you were knocking around withHurstwood or you wouldn't act like that. I don't want the oldrooms. You needn't pull out for me. You can have them for all Icare, but b'George, you haven't done me right."
5. "Oh, was he?" said Hurstwood.
6. Carrie was dwelling in the atmosphere which this man created forher. Already she was enlivened and suffused with a glow. Shefelt his drawing toward her in every sound of his voice.

1. She went hunting aimlessly through the crowded columns. Her mindwas distracted by this man's indifference. The difficulty of thesituation she was facing was only added to by all he did. Self-commiseration brewed in her heart. Tears trembled along hereyelids but did not fall. Hurstwood noticed something.
2. "Miss Madenda presents one of the most delightful bits ofcharacter work ever seen on the Casino stage," observed the stagecritic of the "Sun." "It is a bit of quiet, unassuming drollerywhich warms like good wine. Evidently the part was not intendedto take precedence, as Miss Madenda is not often on the stage, but the audience, with the characteristic perversity of suchbodies, selected for itself. The little Quakeress was marked fora favourite the moment she appeared, and thereafter easily heldattention and applause. The vagaries of fortune are indeedcurious."
3. "Get out of this!" cried the officer, swinging his club. "I'llgive ye a bat on the sconce. Back, now."
4. "There," he said, holding back one of his own good cards, andgiving Carrie a chance to take a trick. "I count that cleverplaying for a beginner."
5. This entanglement made Carrie anxious for a change of some sort.Hurstwood did not seem to realise that she had a right toanything. He schemed to make what she earned cover all expenses, but seemed not to trouble over adding anything himself.
6. Now a sharper lash of wind cut down and they huddled closer. Itwas an edging, shifting, pushing throng. There was no anger, nopleading, no threatening words. It was all sullen endurance, unlightened by either wit or good fellowship.

1. "Did you see that in the 'Herald' this morning about Nat Goodwin,Harris?"
2. "Who is it you wish to see?" he asked.
3. "Did she say when?"
4、 So peculiar, indeed, was her lonely, self-withdrawing temper, that she was becoming an interesting figure in the public eye--she was so quiet and reserved.
5、 "No," returned Carrie with a touch of pride.

"Now," he said affectionately, "you're all right."

Carrie looked at him and felt justified. She was looking forsomething which would calm her conscience, and here it was, alight, airy disregard of her claims upon his justice. He hadfaithfully promised to marry her, and this was the way hefulfilled his promise.

      Drouet's assurance now misgave him. Shallow as was his mentalobservation, there was that in the things which had happenedwhich made his little power of analysis useless. Carrie wasstill with him, but not helpless and pleading. There was a liltin her voice which was new. She did not study him with eyesexpressive of dependence. The drummer was feeling the shadow ofsomething which was coming. It coloured his feelings and madehim develop those little attentions and say those little wordswhich were mere forefendations against danger.}

Hurstwood had come out of his own home that morning feeling muchof the same old annoyance. At his store he had idled, therebeing no need to write. He had come away to this place with thelightness of heart which characterises those who put wearinessbehind. Now, in the shade of this cool, green bush, he lookedabout him with the fancy of the lover. He heard the carts golumbering by upon the neighbouring streets, but they were faroff, and only buzzed upon his ear. The hum of the surroundingcity was faint, the clang of an occasional bell was as music. Helooked and dreamed a new dream of pleasure which concerned hispresent fixed condition not at all. He got back in fancy to theold Hurstwood, who was neither married nor fixed in a solidposition for life. He remembered the light spirit in which heonce looked after the girls--how he had danced, escorted themhome, hung over their gates. He almost wished he was back thereagain--here in this pleasant scene he felt as if he were whollyfree.

She recalled, with more subtle emotions, that he did not look ather now with any of the old light of satisfaction or approval inhis eye. Evidently, along with other things, he was taking herto be getting old and uninteresting. He saw her wrinkles, perhaps. She was fading, while he was still preening himself inhis elegance and youth. He was still an interested factor in themerry-makings of the world, while she--but she did not pursue thethought. She only found the whole situation bitter, and hatedhim for it thoroughly.

That little soldier of fortune took her good turn in an easy way.She felt a little out of place, but the great room soothed herand the view of the well-dressed throng outside seemed a splendidthing. Ah, what was it not to have money! What a thing it wasto be able to come in here and dine! Drouet must be fortunate. He rode on trains, dressed in such nice clothes, was so strong, and ate in these fine places. He seemed quite a figure of a man,and she wondered at his friendship and regard for her.
